The Federal Institute (Bundesinstitut) conducts research into political, economic and social developments in the Russian Federation and in the European successor states to the USSR, in the States of East Central and South-East Europe, in the non-European successor states to the USSR, and into the impact of these developments on international relations. The Bundesinstitut is organized in three departments: I. The Russian Federation and other Successor States to the USSR, II. East Central and South-East Europe, III. Foreign and Security Policy of the CIS-countries The management of the Institute lies with the Executive Director. Academic activities and research are coordinated by an Academic Board which is appointed by the Federal Minister of the Interior and acts in cooperation with the Executive Director.
