The institute conducts basic and field research, provides postgraduate education and specialized expertise. The research strategies of the Institute of Sociology are aimed at the study and analysis of Social stratification and mobility, institutional transformation and regional development, etc. within the context of Russia's transition to a market economy and democracy.

The Institute of Sociology implements 98 research projects with research activities focusing on, but not limited to, areas such as:

• science, education and youth
• human health and mode of life
• social topology
• methodology
• risks and catastrophes
• family and gender
• work and employment
• poverty and unemployment
