Guidelines on improving proposal writing

Although undergraduates and post-graduates are often given training in research methodology, they are often ill-equipped when it comes to writing funding proposals. These guidelines provide practical advice on writing a concept note and a proposal for analytical research.  General advice includes:

  • focus on quality rather than quantity: proposals should only contain relevant and necessary backgroud information, and should avoid repetition or being too long
  • know the subject: those reading the proposal will be experts in the research field, so researchers should ensure they are familiar with key texts
  • editing and presentation: researchers should be clear both in the format used and the language used ensuring they have carried out spelling and grammar checks and ensured there are no numerical errors
