India and the United States: new directions in defence partnership

Over the last decade, defence cooperation between India and the United States has become one of the centrepieces of the two nations' bilateral relations. Indo-US defence ties are driven by the imperatives of not only commerce but, more importantly, geopolitical strategy.

This paper analyses the structural, legal and policy challenges that limit deeper cooperation between India and the US and identifies potential areas for both countries to leverage each other's strengths. It argues that the strategic interests of both India and the US lie at the intersection of a military-strong India, complementing shared security goals of a stable and a multipolar Indo-Pacific.
