Research centre on livestock production, formed by the merger of ILCA and ILRAD. It works to improve the well-being of people in developing countries by enhancing the diverse and essential contributions livestock make to smallholder farming
ILRI undertakes seven programmes
- Three of these programmes focus on improving livestock nutrition, health and geneticsthe traditional pillars of enhanced livestock productivity. (ILRI's animal health research is also applied in human health research with collaborating institutions.)
- Two programmes analyse policy instruments and interactions among people, livestock and the environment to isolate enabling agents for sustainable and equitable development of livestock agro-ecosystems
- The sixth research programme integrates information from the other five programmes in systems models that help ILRI set priorities and assess the impacts of its research.
- Work in a seventh programme helps to strengthen capacity for livestock research in developing countries
