What motivates individuals to become engaged in working for the public good?

The question of what motivates individuals to become engaged in working for the public good is obviously central to the whole range of activities included in the term ‘development’. Yet the spark that ignites such voluntary engagement often seems to be taken for granted. This issue of Development in Practice includes a number of contributions which approach this matter from various directions.
