Developing Women’s Entrepreneurship in the Papua Highlands
This briefing documents the progress of ILO’s Entrepreneurship Skills Development project, which ran in 2009 and 2010 in the Papua Highlands, Indonesia, as part of the UN joint programme for the area. The ILO project was aimed at facilitating activities to develop entrepreneurship skills among communities, particularly among indigenous Papuan women, in the three areas of Jayawijaya, Lani Jaya and Yahukimo. The project had three strategies:
• To develop and maintain a database on micro and small enterprise potential and existing entrepreneurs in the Papua Highlands
• To strengthen entrepreneurship skills among community members, particularly women, by providing micro-entrepreneurs with training
• To assist micro and small entrepreneurs to develop mechanisms for collaboration with existing business development service (BSD) providers and concerned government agencies
Some of the main activities outlined in the briefing are: enhancing awareness of business potential; fostering basic entrepreneurship skills; and increasing capacity to manage enterprises and networking. There are case studies of success stories and a list of recommended documentaries.
