With a particular focus on a case study of the fishing chain in Cauca, Colombia, this paper discusses the impact of knowledge management and how it can enhance the productive chain.
The authors argue that there are a large number of issues that may prevent productive chains succeeding in a demanding and changing world – for example low integration levels and a lack of strategic alliances with external stakeholders and institutions. However, in Cauca, small scale producers have achieved successes, accessing demanding and specific markets with high quality and innovative products. To achieve this, they have gone through long and difficult processes (most of them supported by external institutions) which have generated many important lessons and knowledge.
Key challenges and lessons from Cauca include:
- information and communication technology (ICT) to facilitate access and sharing of information
- the inclusion of knowledge management processes in the fishing productive chain has allowed it to become more solid and more competitive in relation to human, structural and relational capital
- direct association of producers from different geographic zones is a priority, in order to generate strong local management capabilities
- the need for automation and the development of coherent technical support is paramount.
