Comprehensive care for HIV/AIDS is a complete package of care for HIV infected people, which includes clinical, psychosocial, social, legal and nursing care. This toolkit contains materials that service providers can refer to or use to implement the national nutritional guidelines for people with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) attending the comprehensive care centres (CCC) in Kenya, which are health care facilities where HIV patients are treated. These tools can also be used as part of training programs.
The authors look specifically at the parameters of practice for nutrition in HIV/AIDS care and treatment in Kenya, however there are lessons here that can be used in other contexts.
Guidelines are provided on:
- carrying out nutritional and dietary assessments of clients, including recommended indicators and growth references
- conducting nutritional education and counselling on specific topics, e.g. increasing energy intake, the food and nutritional implications of ARVs
- steps for preparing drug-meal plans
- how to provide special food supplements by prescription
- how to manage severely malnourished HIV+ adult in-patients
- nutritional management of diabetes in PLHIV
Data collection and data management guides are also included.
