Think TB in people with HIV: the Three I's for TB control in people with HIV

The three I's of tuberculosis prevention

Authors: T. Smart
Publisher: Aidsmap, 2008

Each year hundreds of thousands of people with HIV develop tuberculosis (TB), mostly in sub- Saharan Africa. Many of them will die from the illness. This publication argues that TB is both preventable and curable and does not have to be a death sentence for people with HIV. The document comprises a series of published articles on the three I’s of reducing the risk of TB in people with HIV. The articles argue that the three I’s are essential activities that all HIV programmes should be doing to protect people with HIV from TB infection and help prevent active disease from developing. These three I’s are:

  • Intensified case finding for active TB such as aggressive screening can lead to early diagnosis of TB which would improve the response to treatment and reducing the likelihood of it spreading to others, it also offers an opportunity to protect those with HIV who do not yet have TB
  • Isoniazid preventative therapy (IPT) is an antibiotic which could reduce the risk of HIV people from developing active TB
  • Infection control should be practised more, this involves measures that reduce the spread of the disease.
