Job: Aga Khan Foundation part of the Aga Khan Development Networkseeks Programme Director, Civil Society, Geneva

Closing date: 30 September 2010

The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) focuses on health, education, culture, rural development, institution-building and the promotion of economic development. It is dedicated to improving living conditions and opportunities for the poor, without regard to their faith, origin or gender.

Cutting across the Foundation’s other programmes in health, education and rural development – as well as the work of the other agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network – the Civil Society Programme seeks to leverage AKDN’s diverse and extensive economic and social development activities to make a contribution to the wider civil societies in which they operate. The objectives of the Programme are to build the civil society sector in the countries in which AKDN works, and to build societies which are rooted in the ethical practices of each host country. While acknowledging ongoing vigorous debates about civil society organisations, this programme will look practically and operationally to create opportunities for groups of citizens, existing or newly formed, to extend the reach of their skills and interests for the public good. It recognises that there is a major need to strengthen existing and create new systems of leadership, governance and management of private interests organised for the public benefit. These opportunities involve businesses, educational institutions, professional associations, as well as those organisations referred to as Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

The Programme Director is responsible for leading a strategic review of current activities and the conception, articulation, promotion, implementation and fund-raising for the further development of a programme to stimulate and expand civil society’s role and contribution in the countries in which the Network operates in Central and South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.
