Gender management system handbook

A practical guidebook on establishing gender management systems aimed primarily at governments, NGOs and inter-governmental agencies

Authors: ; Commonwealth Secretariat
Publisher: Gender and Development [Commonwealth Secretariat], 1999

This handbook is a guide to the establishment of a Gender Management System.

It is primarily intended for use by governments at the national level, but may also be used by inter- governmental agencies, provincial and local governments, NGOs, academic institutions, professional associations and the private sector. It is designed to be flexible, presenting a menu of options that governments can adapt to suit their own national ccircumstances

The handbook provides a brief overview of the history and basic concepts of gender and development, but does not seek to review in depth the various theoretical approaches to understanding gender and advancing gender equality that have been developed globally. Rather, it draws upon elements of several of these approaches to present a practical system whereby governments and other organisations can take concrete steps to advance the cause of gender equality and equity through gender mainstreaming.[Commonwealth Secretriat]
