Facilitator’s guide on gender training

Originally developed for Gendernet, this online guide is aimed at gender focal points (GFPs) and other staff in the Gendernet member organizations with a responsibility to train others on gender. It has been developed to support the design and delivery of gender training by GFPs and is not a ‘training of trainers’ guide.

The guide is based on a number of assumptions about the intended users. Namely, that GFPs:

  • are well versed in gender and development theory and practice, have experience in applying and effectively communicating gender and development analytical concepts and are able to draw upon this experience when delivering training sessions and interpreting case studies provided in this guide 
  • have experience in designing and delivering gender training and facilitating adult learning processes and have undergone gender training themselves

As a resource, the guide provides “building blocks” which facilitators can use to design customised training workshops and has been designed with the assumption that potential learners have little or basic understanding of gender and development concepts. There are three sections following the introduction:  an overview of gender training, the training modules, sessions and suggested workshop plans and further resources.

Training modules cover the following areas: 

  • an introduction to gender and development including social relations of gender, gender inequity and poverty, institutional production and reproduction of gender 
  • gender analysis and planning including key concepts and a review of gender analysis concepts, gender and the programme cycle, gender aware design and planning and monitoring and evaluation 
  • gender mainstreaming and organisational change including policy approaches to addressing gender and equality in development 
  • advocacy and change including a look at power and change and developing advocacy strategies 
  • facilitators tools such as introductions or ice breakers and energisers

There are also suggested workshop plans which provide ideas for how this guide can be used to design workshop outlines.
