Job: Mercy Corps seeks Economic Recovery Program Manager, DRC
Closing date: 17 April 2010
Mercy Corps has been operating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since August 2007. Mercy Corps’ activities are currently in Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH), Environment and Food Security, but Mercy Corps is also moving towards transitional development programming in economic recovery, livelihoods, financial services, agriculture and health.
The Mercy Corps DRC staff is comprised of 100 members who work throughout North Kivu and Orientale Provinces. Mercy Corps has established an office and programming in Dungu, Haut-Uélé District, Orientale Province, in the DRC. Following protracted conflict and insecurity, people are now returning to the town of Dungu. However, the purchasing power of households has fallen as displacement and insecurity limit access to customary income-generation activities, and local markets are vulnerable to collapse as demand for goods and services declines. Mercy Corps is therefore implementing a program to assist displaced populations in Haut Uele with a cash-based program incorporating Cash-for-Work, Cash Transfers and Market Infrastructure Rehabilitation. This will allow households to obtain food and non-food items while also strengthening the local economy, and is expected to directly benefit 24,000 vulnerable individuals.
