The Toronto Declaration on the global prevention of elder abuse
Call for Action aimed at the prevention of elder abuse
Declaration aiming to to raise awareness of the abuse of human rights of older people and points to be considered for improvement. Highlighted areas include:
- lack of proper legal instruments to respond and deal with elder abuse
- the role of primary health care workers
- the improtance of education and dissemination of information
- the significance of cultural perspective in order to fully understand the phenomenon of elder abuse
- the gender perspective
- the call for all countries to develop the structures that will allow the provision of services (health, social, legal protection, police referral, etc) to appropriately respond and eventually prevent the problem
