The Role of the German "Stiftungen" in the Process of democratisation

This paper gives an overview of the system of the five German "Stiftungen", and describes in general terms their aims, objectives and activities in support of transitional democratic processes in general, and in Sub-Saharan Africa in particular. It also evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of this model of co-operation and indicates concrete areas for future political support, including support for political parties.
