Assessing the efficiency and outreach of micro-finance schemes
Focuses on the ability of credit unions to efficiently handle loans to microenterprises, by sighting both their strengths and weaknesses. The discussion begins with a historical background on credit unions and microenterprises, followed by an analysis of major issues that might be considered before channelling funds through credit unions to small businesses. In order to illustrate these issues, the paper summarizes the results of programs aimed at developing credit unions in the DominicanRepublic and several other Latin American countries. It also contains useful guidelines for policy makers who wish to channel funds through credit unions for microenterprises.[author]
