Development communication sourcebook: broadening the boundaries of communication

Communicating for sustainable development
View full report

Media, no matter how technologically advanced, messages, no matter how skillfully packaged, and information, no matter how relevant, are not enough to bring about meaningful and sustainable development results. These results can only be achieved if the people involved (stakeholders) are part of the process leading to change.

This sourcebook intends to make clear the distinction between communication about development operations and results and communication for development operations and results. It can be used by everyone who has an interest in the success and sustainability of development initiatives, from communication practitioners to managers. (adapted from author)

A modular approach has been taken allowing users to have a comprehensive overview, or to select specific modules for their professional interest, or for training purposes. Modules include:

  • Concepts, relative applications of development communication and its relevance to operations
  • Theoretical foundations: paradigms and models
  • Methodological applications including communication research or communication-based assessment, strategy design, implementation and evaluation
  • World Bank DevComm case studies
The module on methodological applications provides advice on communication for each of the four stages including examples of steps and action plans as well as toolboxes.
