Assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the Mesoamerican Agro-Environmental Programme (MAP)
View full report

The Meso-american Agro-Environmental Programme (MAP) was established in 2008 as a platform with multiple partner organisations for managing knowledge and innovation. The purpose of this assessment is to shed some light on MAP capacity to achieve its goals, and to provide observations, conclusions and recommendations for improvements on specific aspects of the programme.

The assessment concludes that MAP is advancing in a satisfactorily on its way towards the fulfillment of its development objectives and of the programme. Other findings include:

  • MAP recognises the importance of encouraging the effective participation of the most vulnerable and marginalised groups of the region in their projects activities
  • the technology developed for each MAP projects is transferred in an efficient and successful manner
  • MAP projects combat climate change risks through technological innovation related to adaptation strategies, yet any action at micro level would be modest compared to the needs of the region
  • it is expected that the products developed by MAP projects will continue beyond the programme duration.

The authors conclude that MAP must continue searching alliances and strategies to insure that such groups be included in its interventions. In addition, they recommend that:

  • the programme must define indicators that allow monitoring, quantification and report the impact of its actions in the different capitals and rural areas
  • MAP must strengthen its capacity to make an impact in gender equity, ethnicity and inter-generational themes.
  • a thesis on themes relative to gender, indigenous people, government relations, land access and possession must be written
  • it would be beneficial to document and systemise the existing local strategies in the region for adaptation to climate variability as a base for planning the corresponding interventions.
