The state of environmental migration 2011

View full report

This report is the second volume in an annual series, which aims to provide regular assessments on the changing nature and dynamics of environmental migration. This volume focuses on cross-border displacement and the securitisation of migration. It finds that in some cases the lack of protection standards and legal status of those displaced aggravates a situation where quotas, walls and externalisation processes of migration control considerably limit possibilities of migration. Written by students of the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) of Sciences Po, the presented case studies analyse the migration flows that were induced by some of the most dramatic events of 2011, both sudden disasters and slow-onset events. The Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) initiated, supervised and edited the volume.
