This article from Human Resources for Health reports on research conducted into motivation and performance management among health workers in Mali. This research found that healthcare staff can be better motivated by being given greater responsibility and being held accountable for their work. Improvements in performance management can therefore play a significant part in improving motivation.
Healthcare workers in Mali reported that the main motivating factors in their work, apart from salary, were responsibility, recognition and training. The main de-motivating factor was the lack of equipment and material. These findings were consistent across all groups of health workers, though physicians placed greater emphasis on feeling responsible and nurses on salary. The research also found that performance management is not being optimally implemented in Mali. A significant proportion of the respondents either had inappropriate job descriptions or none at all. Very few had received adequate supervision or training assessments, and many perceived that the process for appraising their work was subjective. The report recommended that performance management be strengthened and that performance management strategies be related to the key motivational factors identified in the research
