This document presents the results of a workshop held by the Drylands Coordination Group (DCG) in Eritrea from the 4th-5th December 2003, which aimed to identify problems and recommend solutions in bridging the gap between research, extension and the farmer. The workshop consisted of presentations of 4 recent papers on related issues, followed by 4 working groups. Participants were mainly from the sub-zoba level – the lowest administrative unit in Ethiopea – and included many farmers from different regions and livelihood sources.

Group discussions centred around the following themes:

  • the existing relationship between farmers and extensions
  • farmers knowledge of extension
  • bridging the gap between farmers and extension
  • farmers’ sources of information in the absence of assistance from extension
  • ownership and participation of farmers in agricultural projects
  • information systems for agricultural development

Participants were encourage to find solutions that were grassroots-oriented, reflected gender needs, reflected different agro-ecological zones and sources of agricultural livelihoods and took account of low human and infrastructural capacity in Eritrea. The report includes a list of the recommendations given by the working groups, which relate to the areas mentioned above.
