The rapid development and diffusion of biotechnology and in particular genetic engineering is happening at a time when the African continent is faced with a number of daunting challenges including declining agricultural productivity and increasing poverty. This four page document outlines a study into how the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) should approach biotechnology.
Recommendations include:
- most stakeholders interviewed have mixed perceptions about biotechnology and believe it should be dismissed outright
- many stakeholders are of the opinion that the level of risks associated with GM are high
- there is overall inadequate capacity in most of the countries identified as potential GM growers, both in terms of human resources and laboratory equipment
