Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD)

This manual has been written to empower indigenous peoples to participate more effectively in shaping relevant policies and actions taken to address issues related to climate change. It also aims to enlighten non-indigenous peoples on indigenous peoples’ experiences and perspectives on climate change.

The manual provides an overview of climate change and then looks at: 

• impacts of climate change on indigenous people and mitigation measures 
  
• climate change, biodiversity and indigenous people 
  
• indigenous peoples’ approaches to adaptation 
  
• the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) initiative and indigenous people 
  
• indigenous women and climate change 
  
• current state of climate change negotiations
  
• using the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a framework for indigenous peoples’ engagement in the climate change processes, some of the suggested ways forward include:

For indigenous peoples 

• preservation of their rights to maintain traditional use of plants and animals while deepening their understanding of climate change so as to implement effective mitigation and adaptation measures 
  
• better documentation and sharing of good practice in these measures 
  
• participation in climate change fora and the formulation of national policies as well as sustained advocacy work with the above mentioned UNFCCC

For UN agencies and bi- and multi-lateral bodies 

• use of the Ecosystem approach and further research on climate change and indigenous peoples to inform policy and programme formulation 
  
• the Arctic region, as an early indicator of climate change and the vulnerability of its coastal indigenous peoples, should be designated as a special climate change focal point 
  
• immediate provision of adaptation funds for indigenous peoples affected by climate change related disasters
