Consequences of climate change and gender vulnerability: Bangladesh perspective
According to this study, in Bangladesh, women are more vulnerable than men generally to all kinds of disasters and climate related impacts due to gender inequalities in social, economic and political institutions. Women have limited access to and control over natural resources or money, and more importantly are less mobile and have limited access to information. The study focuses on climate change and gender vulnerability in the context of Khulna region. It finds that most climate change issues, policies and programmes are not gender neutral. Moreover, as the household manager women have to bear the burden of meeting the needs of the family, even when fighting against adversities. The paper highlights several areas which deserve attention, specifically: resource use patterns; gender-specific effects of climate change; patterns of vulnerability; womens capacity to cope with climate change; gender and decision-making on climate change; and gender aspects of mitigation and adaptation.
