Building community capacity through Older People’s Associations (OPAs) enhances the resilience of a community in the event of a disaster. Lessons learnt suggest that there are many ways in which older men and women can contribute in planning and coordinating community responses to disasters. [adapted from author]

This resource book aims to strengthen the capacity of organisations working with older people in planning and implementing age-sensitive responses to disasters. It is aimed at managers of development and humanitarian organisations working in the Asia /Pacific region.

Its structure is based on the project cycle management model providing suggestions and case studies rather than tools for the topics below, hence enabling the development of context-specific responses.

Topics covered include:

  • An introduction to older people’s associations
  • Age-friendly information gathering
  • Planning age-friendly responses
  • Implementing age-friendly responses
  • Networking and advocacy
In addition, the annexes include a step by step guide to forming an OPA and several checklists.
