Study on perspectives of energy production systems and climate change risks in Nigeria
The study presents the climate change risks associated with energy production and utilisation, as well as the possibility of achieving low carbon development in Nigeria. It describes climate change as a global phenomenon, but notes that the adversity of its impacts depends on the types of causative agents and geographical locations of the beneficiary. The study finds that the major generic causes of climate change are energy related activities as energy consumption in Nigeria are found with mix ratio of 58 per cent oil, 34 per cent natural gas, 8 per cent hydroelectricity, where in production 50 per cent natural gas is flared. The study concludes that climate change adaptation strategies will promote low carbon development in Nigeria, if they are coupled with technological innovation. The study also recommends that some ethical challenges are to be identified which affect the success of the suggested policy framework, e.g. sabotage and lack of integrity in policy implementation.
