Teaching the skills and values associated with peaceful behaviours

This toolikit forms part of the “Inter-Agency Peace Education Programme”. The programme is designed for education managers of ministries dealing with both formal and non-formal education and for agencies which implement education activities on behalf of the government.

The Peace Education Programme teaches the skills and values associated with peaceful behaviours. The programme is designed to enable and encourage people to think constructively about issues, both physical and social, and to develop constructive attitudes towards living together and solving problems that arise in their communities through peaceful means. The programme aims to create constructive behaviours for dealing with problems so as to minimise or eliminate conflict and reduce negative behaviour which may contribute to conflict. Containing a number of useful documents including a manual for training teachers and a manual for training facilitators, some of its key elements include: 

  • the Formal Education Component-This was designed to be mainstreamed into the school programme. It is based on one lesson per week very structured, taking into account the age and developmental level of the students 
  • the Non-formal Education Component- The community programme is usually conducted as a series of stand-alone workshops. This is because the structure has been developed to build the skills and values so that they culminate in a compound set of skills that we call conflict resolution
  • manual for training teachers- this looks at the skills required to develop “effective facilitation of adult learners”. These skills are useful not just for a Peace Education programme but also for all aspects of the professional life of the people with whom you are working 
  • community component- this has been designed to refine skills, and understanding of content and methodology in teaching the Peace Education Programme and to help understanding of the methods, values and attitudes that are necessary to help create a behavioural and attitudinal change.
