The paper argues that the key challenge for Fair Trade coffee is to expand markets due to a current oversupply. Very often, co-operatives sell only 10 to 15 percent of their coffee under Fair Trade conditions, while the rest has to be sold to intermediaries, exporters or traders in common mainstream value chains.
