This book examines the nature of corporate codes of conduct in Asia, and assesses how they can be utilised in improving working conditions of Asian workers. Based on the authors’ experiences, it looks into both the opportunities as well as the limits of codes of conduct, and identifies ways to engage with multinational corporations in a constructive way.
The book highlights to conditions that need to be fulfilled to make codes of conduct work. Firstly content and implementation of codes of conduct need to be pushed beyond market concerns, such as profitability and efficiency. Codes of conducts need to be applied to corporations as responsibility, rather than as another marketing strategy for more profit. Secondly, workers participation has to be guaranteed in the monitoring process, and in writing and revising the codes.
