Tourism
This website is a product of collaboration between the Centre for Responsible Tourism (CRT) at the University of Greenwich, the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), and the Overseas Development Institute (ODI).
Pro-poor tourism (PPT) is tourism that generates net benefits for the poor. PPT strategies aim to unlock opportunities for the poor, rather than to expand the overall size of the sector. Opportunities may be for economic gain, other livelihood benefits, or engagement in decision-making.
PPT strategies are not confined to a specific product or sector of tourism, as PPT is an approach to the industry. PPT strategies involve a range of stakeholders operating at different levels, from micro to macro. Stakeholders include government, the private sector and civil society, as well as the poor themselves who act as both producers and decision-makers.
