Labelling and certification
- Convergence between certification and verification in the drive to legality assurance
- In recent years there has been a convergence between forest certification and verification, with several producer governments said to be willing to consider certification as a surrogate for formal legality assurance. Whilst such a convergence does offer benefits in terms of reducing the costs and administrative load on producers, it is not without its risks. This paper considers the pros and cons of the convergence, and identifies some of the conditions that need to be met if the two instruments are to function in a mutually supportive way.
