Challenges and opportunities for the European paper industry

This paper discusses some of the major social and environmental challenges facing the European paper industry whilst highlighting associated risks and opportunities for long term returns. It also looks at a number good practice case studies.
One of the key facts highlighted by the authors is that a third of global forest area is used by forest industries. Plantation forests’ share (4%) is increasing as they are far more productive than natural forests. Fast growing plantations already supply a quarter of the world’s industrial wood harvest and are expected to contribute nearly half by 2040.
