Conflict is an unavoidable aspect of human social systems. Given the central importance of water resources to all human communities, it is natural that conflicts arise with regard to access, allocation, development and management of the resource.

This training manual provides five modules which look at the following areas:

  • understanding integrated water resource management (IWRM): principles, key criteria and tipping points for conflict
  • methods and approaches to conflict management and conflict resolution
  • negotiation methods and the role of the mediator including determining a Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement
  • general trends in water agreements and management arrangements around the world (including basin specific accords, protocols on shared water courses, and the impact of pollution on communities using the same water source
  • best practices and appropriate management practices including entry points for cooperation and dispute settlement

The manual includes a sample course programme while each module contains checklists, exercises and suggested further reading.
