Authors: ; World Bank
Publisher: World Bank, 2006

The newly upgraded and updated Private Participation in Infrastructure (PPI) Project Database website provides information about 3,000 infrastructure projects that involve private investment, for 150 low- and middle- income countries. It spans the period 1984 to 2004, and covers projects in the energy, telecommunications, transport, and water and sewerage sectors.

Data from the database can be viewed as snapshots by sector, region, and country, or users can build their own reports using up to 30 data fields. Users can also use the database to:

  • generate rankings
  • generate project detail reports by criteria such as country, infrastructure subsector and country income level
  • generate customised data views on total projects and investment commitments by country and sector
  • learn about private-sector sponsors
  • learn which projects are concessions, divestitures or greenfield projects

Further resources available through the website include:

  • reports on topics such as international trends in private investment in infrastructure, strategies for countries to attract private finance, and reviews of privately financed projects
  • toolkits to design PPI schemes for: water and sanitation; telecommunications; ports; highways; concessions; and hiring managers and advisors
  • papers discussing PPI issues or transaction information
  • selected reading lists of papers dealing with private participation
  • reviews of country- or project-level experiences
