Global Information and Early Warning System, FAO (GIEWS)


WWW site, in English, Spanish and French, includes:

(a) Reports: full text of regular FAO reports including: Food Outlook; Food Supply Situation and Crop Prospects in sub-Saharan Africa; Foodcrops and Shortages; Sahel Weather and Crop Situation; Special Reports and Alerts on Emergency Situations

(b) Databases on African Countries - Agriculture and Food Supply Country profiles: for countries in Western and Central Africa and for Southern Africa (latter in conjunction with SADC FSTAU:the data is also available on their WWW server (see separate entry)). For each country there is a an overview report, collection of news bulletins, agricultural/food statistics, graphs of food production/imports/food aid, satellite images, pest outbreak information (including locust data), and a series of maps (covering administrative districts, population density, climatic zones, crop distribution) and a calendar of average planting dates / cropping season for the main crops.

Regular reports are also distributed by email via free distribution lists (details on WWW)
