Quarterly report of the Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS). It provides an assessment of the current food supply situation in sub-Saharan Africa, highlights the major food emergencies in the region and draws attention to the countries where the need for donor assistance is most urgent. Special features address pertinent issues such as the role of irrigation in food security, new initiatives to increase food production, trends in donor food assistance and threats to regional food security by plant pests and livestock diseases. Statistical information and descriptive text are provided for each sub-region and country. The main focus is on the current season’s crops and on food assistance requirements, but the report also addresses a wide range of questions relating to regional, national and sub-national food security. The results of recent rapid assessment missions are summarized.
