Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods Programme, IIED (SARL)

The Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods (SARL) Programme of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) works to develop more effective and equitable forms of agriculture and natural resource management. The Programme helps different interest groups to understand trade-offs relating to their livelihood strategies, identify common ground, and negotiate pathways to positive actions that support rural regeneration.

Examples of projects include:

  • sustaining local food systems, agricultural biodiversity and local livelihoods
  • the policy influence of NGOs in sub-Saharan Africa
  • domestic water use and environmental health in East Africa
  • participatory monitoring and evaluation for natural resource management
  • rural-urban interactions

The programme web site pages include project details, with full text project documents, and examples of the Gatekeeper paper series which SARL produces to highlight key topics in the field of sustainable agriculture and resource management.
