Three common gender research methodologies

Authors:
Publisher: United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women , 2007

This document provides an overview of common gender research methodologies in the development field. It particularly focuses on the three main areas below:

gender analysis approach: this includes several different approaches such as sex-disaggregated data and the analysis of women and men’s roles, and access to resources. The approaches however, differ in the degree to which analysis is extended beyond the sphere of production, the degree to which they consider other social relations and also in the extent to which they are based on gender equity principles

social relations approach: through this approach, ending women's subordination is viewed as more than a matter of reallocating economic resources. The central focus is on generating a shift in power relations

rights based approach: this is defined by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) as a conceptual framework that integrates the norms, standards and principles of the international human rights system into the plans, policies and processes of development.
