What are the positive and negative impacts of microcredit on women and what role they can play in tackling poverty in the European Union? This report from a one day workshop considers whether microcredit can really lead to women’s empowerment in the South and what are the improvements to make and the lessons learnt from this? The document examines whether microcredit be considered a sustainable alternative to stimulate employment and the fight against poverty and discrimination both in the Global South as well as in the EU.
The report outlines the proceedings of the day and provides details about individual presentations including sessions which focused on gender justice in the Democratic Republic of Congo and microfinance in Mediterranean countries. Various concerns and opinions are highlighted from an interactive session between participants and the panel including:
- how to ensure governments do not abdicate social policy responsibilities in the advent of micro credit schemes
- the impact of the financial crisis on financing
- the need for market education and follow-up training for women as part of Micro-credit schemes
- the role of the European Union
- the issue of the setting of interest rates.
