Equal and Indivisible: Crafting inclusive shadow reports for CEDAW

View full report

How can the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) be utilised as a mechanism to redress discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity? Since the adoption of CEDAW 30 years ago, a strategy to expand rights related to sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression has developed. This handbook is for writing shadow/alternative CEDAW reports that incorporate the human rights of lesbian, bisexual and transgender women. In addition to covering the technical aspects of the reporting process, this guide also describes the associated challenges and provides recommendations for using CEDAW for these purposes. Examples from human rights reports from various countries and regions are provided within the following thematic categories:

- Violence against women
- Recognition of a person’s identity
- Forced marriage and discrimination on grounds of marital status
- Discrimination and violence against LBT human rights defenders
- Right to education
- Right to health
- Discrimination in employment and housing
