Beijing+20

BPFAThe Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA), celebrated by feminist activists as a triumph for women's rights, is 20 years old. The world that it once described has changed profoundly in some respects, and yet in others remains surprisingly similar.

This blog post written by Jenny Edwards and Amy Hall (Institute of Development Studies) reflects on the Fourth World Conference on Women, and the creation of the BPfA, in 1995 and its significance in shaping global gender equality today. Noting some huge global changes over the past twenty years they ask if it is time to organise the Fifth World Conference on Women to reinvigorate debate on gender equality.

This update features a handful of key resources which chart the slow progress of turning the commitments of Beijing into real gains for women's rights and the implications for turning subsequent commitments into action. They also show that the gap between the promises of protocols and the realities of women’s lives is still all too apparent, and ask the question where now for gender equality in the post-2015 development agenda?
