Publisher: Private Sector Partnerships-One , 2008

This report documents proceedings of a regional workshop co-sponsored by the World Health Organisation and US Agency for International Development (USAID) held May 7-10, 2008, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The purpose of the workshop was to develop national capacity to design and manage partnerships with private sector stakeholders and provide an overview of the selected policy instruments commonly available to Ministries of Health and Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) units.

Overall, the report makes a case for why it is important to work with the private health sector as a means to help address health challenges in reproductive health, family planning, and HIV and AIDS. The report also offers a concise overview of the policy instruments the public sector can utilise to engage and encourage the private health sector to deliver services. Through the country action plans developed by the participating teams, the report presents the design of a partnering process while, at the same time, stressing the management and leadership skills required to implement and sustain a PPP.
