Poverty reduction

A number of countries have formulated poverty reduction strategies (PRSs) and Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) as a means of fostering a coordinated effort by government, stakeholders and development partners. They have given considerable emphasis to participation by the poor in this process, which increases the likelihood that their needs will be taken into account.

One difficulty with the implementation of PRSs is that many poor people live in localities where public administration and governance mechanisms are weak. There have been a number of initiatives to overcome this problem. For example, efforts have been made to track resource flows to ensure they are used for the intended purposes.

PRSPs: their significance for health: second synthesis report

This report, from the World Health Organization (WHO), presents an analysis of the Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) from a health perspective. The study asks two questions: to what extent does improved health play a role in poverty reduction; and to what extent does the health component of PRSPs identify and propose strategies to meet the specific health needs of poor people?
