What factors influence a country's legal position on abortion? This publication is
based on the work of The Johannesburg Initiative, which brought together representatives from different parts of the world in order to compare and learn from abortion advocacy experiences. Through a case study approach, the initiative used insights from pro-choice activists working in the non-government sector in diverse international contexts as a way to build capacity amongst those engaged in advocacy for improving abortion access. The report also provides a conceptual framework for enabling activists to understand the many processes which together influence both formal and informal policy change on abortion. Reports from 10 of the organisations involved in the Initiative are included in this publication. They include case studies on: the Australian pro-choice movement and the struggle for legal clarity and liberal laws; current status of policy and access to abortion in Bangladesh; implementing a liberal abortion law in Guyana; and expanding abortion access in the United States of America.
