Rights and advocacy
Children's health is closely linked to children's rights. This is true in relation to the underlying determinants of child health and well-being, as well as to the ways in which health policies, programmes and services are delivered to children.
The Millennium Development Goals and the 2002 UN General Assembly Special Session on Children (A World Fit for Children) focused on the political commitment of governments to primary education, achieving gender equality, and reducing mortality and HIV infections in children and adolescents. The 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child clarified the legal obligations of governments for the health and well-being of children. However, the law, policies, programmes and practice vary considerably according to local circumstances and capacities.
