Trends, measurements and indicators
Approximately 90 per cent of the communicable disease burden is borne by the developing world, with a disproportionate share involving young pre-school age children. Although there are regional differences, many diseases are common. While mortality from diarrhoea has declined, attack rates and burden remain high.
Pneumonia has assumed even greater importance in both attack rate and mortality. The toll from pneumonia and diarrhoea is exacerbated by malnutrition, recurrent infection, and poverty. Polio has been eliminated from much of the world, but remains a concern in sub-Saharan Africa. While there has been some progress in combating communicable disease, more effort is required, particularly for pneumonia.
- Social and environmental risk factors in the emergence of infectious diseases
- This article from Nature Medicine Supplement looks at the emergence over the past 30 years of new diseases including hepatitis C, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and avian influenza, alongside the resurgence of "old" diseases such as cholera. The authors argue that these trends are influenced by multiple social and environmental factors.
