How does an NGO determine whether they are effectively addressing the needs of women living with HIV/AIDS, or if they are contributing to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)? This toolkit outlines benchmarks for evaluating progress in achieving the three MDGs that are directly pertinent to the reproductive health of HIV/AIDS infected women.
In September 2000, 189 countries signed the Millennium Declaration which committed to tackle poverty and injustice, reduce illiteracy and improve the health of the world’s poorest people within 15 years. These commitments underpin the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Whilst only three goals relate directly to health (to reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, and combat HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases) health is central to achieving all eight goals, especially those relating to eradicating extreme poverty and hunger and promoting gender equality. Despite this, progress towards meeting the health related MDGs remains the slowest.

This section lists the goals and their associated targets and indicators. Where applicable, links are included to the relevant sections of the Health, Health systems and HIV and AIDS resource guides, and related resources are listed.
