Strategies, programmes and initiatives
Malaria can be diagnosed by clinical signs (presumptive diagnosis), microscopy, rapid diagnostic tests and DNA-based methods. Various drugs are used in the treatment of malaria. However, due to development and spread of resistance, artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACT) are strongly advocated, and regular surveillance of drug efficacy is now a routine activity.
Malaria can be controlled by targeting either the vector, using insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs), indoor residual spraying, or genetic and biological manipulations; or the parasite, through mass drug administration and intermittent preventive treatment in pregnant women, infants and children. A number of candidate malaria vaccines are also on various levels of field trial.
