Trends, measurements and indicators
Each year, up to three million deaths are due to malaria, and close to five billion episodes occur in the world. 90 per cent of the burden is in Africa, affecting mainly children. HIV-infected women experience more malaria and adverse birth outcomes than HIV-uninfected women.
There is also a correlation between malaria and poverty. However, the nature of the linkages and mechanisms of causation is less clear. Data to monitor progress in malaria control come from the health facility, household surveys, remote sensing and modelling. Progress on the coverage of interventions in Africa has been summarised in the 2003 Africa Malaria Report.
- Evaluation of rapid diagnostic tests: malaria
- This paper, published in Nature Reviews Microbiology, provides guidelines for evaluating the effectiveness of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) in diagnosing malaria. The paper describes the different types of malaria RDTs and the importance of evaluating them.
